I live in a log cabin deep in the National Park with my lifemate, five dogs, three cats and five mice. The park is 33,000 acres of forest and wetlands that began as an urban experiment in the 1970's. It now preserves 22 miles along the Cuyahoga River . This area was once an important transportation route for the Native American people. The area was deemed neutral territory by historic tribes so that all might travel it safely from the Great Lakes to the warm waters south. In the 1800s, it was the home of the Ohio & Erie Canal, which replaced the crooked river as the primary transportation artery. Portions of the canal and its historic locks still stand. In the 1860's, the railroad replaced the canal. Today, the rails through the Park are ridden by passengers on the Scenic Railroad, which offers excursions year-round.

We consider ourselves extremely fortunate to have been able to live for the past six years in the Park. Although only a few miles from the nearest "City", we
live a fairly rugged life in our log cabin. To us, the real attraction of the Park is the nature and wildlife. Situated almost 1/2 mile off the road, the cabin on three acres is nestled among nut and other deciduous trees. In 2004 we harvested walnuts. There is a wide diversity of wildlife here. Someof our daily visitors include a variety of birds, ranging from chickadees to pileated woodpeckers to Great Horned Owls, white-tailed deer, raccoons, skunks, opossum, turtles, at least five varieties of squirrels, coyote, wild turkeys, chipmunks, and my personal favorite: tiny toads. In other areas of the park we've seen beavers, great blue herons and bald eagles.

Every season of the year here, brings unparalled beauty and new challenges. I hope to never live in the city, again.

Some of the scenes from around the cabin. Wild turkeys in the back yard, deer in the meadow, and a hummingbird on the porch feeder.
